In order that your artwork will retain its beauty for many years to come, this is a brief but helpful guide to caring for your artwork within your home.

  • Insurance: Always specifically insure original artwork against theft and accidental damage. A small investment now could be invaluable in the future.

  • Handling: Unframed original artwork should be handled as little as possible, ensure that hands are thoroughly washed immediately before handling. Prints are particuarly vulnerable to damage so should remain in their packaging until they are framed.

  • Framing: Framing should be done to the highest quality using acid free materials that will not interact with the artwork or prints. Good quality framing needn't be expensive and is well worth the investment.

  • Hanging: Artwork should be hung from a heavy duty wall hook that is securely fixed. Ideally heavy framed or glazed artwork should always be hung from two hooks as these will provide greater stability and support.

  • Lighting: It is best to completely avoid locating artwork in direct sunlight, fading due to UV sunlight rays is cumulative and irreversible.

  • Climate: Avoid locating artwork in an area prone to large or sudden temperature changes. The room temperature and humidity should also remain reasonably constant, as large temperature changes cause expansion and contraction of both the artwork and framing materials.

  • Cleaning: To ensure artwork retains its lustre it should be intermittently cleaned. Glazed artwork should be gently wiped with a damp soft cloth and unglazed artwork should be gently dusted.
