New Painting – Postbridge

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010

It is believed that the famous clapper bridge at Postbridge right in the heart of  Dartmoor dates back to the 12th century. The clapper bridge straddles the East Dart River, just twenty metres from the main road built in the 1780′s and is clearly visible as you drive through the village. The bridge is constructed from 4 large granite slabs supported by two granite piers. The large slabs are each over 4m long and 2m wide and weigh over 8 tons each. The aim of this snowscene painting was to convey the incredible scale of this ancient bridge.

This Oil painting is of Double Locks on the old Exeter shipping canal. Double Locks are the longest in the country, 95m long and 8m wide. They are called Double locks as they can accomodate two ships at once and the mast of HMS Exeter forms part of the lock gates.
